IPFire is an open source Linux distribution that acts primarily as a router and firewall, with a web-based user interface for configuration.
IPFire is based on Linux from Scratch.
The basic system is relatively slim, services such as: DHCP server, VPN based on IPSec / OpenVPN, firewall filters can be activated / deactivated. Pakfire, the Pakage package management system, can be used to install extensions and updates.
Although IPfire can be virtualized like an ordinary operating system, a 'real firewall' should always run on physical hardware, as network performance makes the difference, see the table below, throughput values with associated CPU, and network adapters.
