Traffic shaping, Internet and network bandwidth speed limiter

In a network environment a user can sometimes use up to 90% of the available bandwidth (Internet speed), even if other users are surfing at the same time.
Through Traffic Shaper, a user can e.g. use a maximum of 25% of the bandwidth if there are 3 other users also use Internet. 20% if another user joins. see drawing below.
Traffic shaping are transparent devices by default, meaning that they are invisible to users or other network components.
Thus, they can be used anywhere between 2 network segments without nooed to make changes to the existing network.

Traffic shapping device is a bandwidth management controller or QoS router that regulate network data transport rates. The question is, why does speed have to be limited?
Yes, this is necessary so that Internet pages are loaded faster for everyone, it reduces the speed of Internet-heavy applications (such as long downloads). Sometimes it is also necessary that critical departments or user groups (e.g. VPN) are prioritised over others.

Sylbek Traffic Shaper has at least 3 ports as: Internet, LAN, Server. When connected between the LAN network and the Internet, it regulates Internet speed.
At the same time, Traffic Shaper can also be connected with a server port, then it also regulates the speed of the LAN server (network limited). The settings for both directions can be set separately.

Sylbek Traffic Shaper can handle services to the Internet differently, see drawing below.
These 4 groups: 1. VoIP, 2 VPN, 3 Http / Https, 4 Others (e-mail, for example) are exemplary. Possible are other group definitions as well as company departments through subneting groups.
For group definition, there is a ready-made template with firewall configuration, which is available to be loaded by one click. Any speed can be set, since bit is the smallest unit.

Deployment example 1
A company with 140 employees had good Internet speed. However, the VPN connection to the main office was sometimes very slow.
Through Traffic Shaper in IP firewall mode, a VPN-Group was defined and set with 2nd priority. For the VPN group only 5 Mbit were granted as the download and upload limit
Nevertheless, a stable VPN connection could be determined. Since HTTP/HTTPS has 50% of the total bandwidth with 3. priority, the surfing speed is also satisfactory.
Explanation: A maximum limit must be entered especially for HTTP/HTTPS group so that for other services something remains.

Deployment example 2
A school with 1200 pupils has an Internet connection of 50 MBit. Internet surfing is still slow when about 200 pupils connect to the Internet at the same time.
Traffic Shaper deployment in bridge mode distributes the bandwidth fairly. So that each user has practically approximately 2.5 Mbit in the Download available. Furthermore, short downloads (clicks and read) are prioritised by 25% over long downloads. This value is set as a maximum limit, so that even if a pupil makes a long download, he affects negatively the remaining pupils with a maximum of 2.5 Mbit.
Explanation and assumptions: 200 concurrent users who wait for about 2 seconds on data (download, surf) and then read around 18 seconds (no download), result a speed of 2560 Kbit = 50 * 1024 Kbit / 200 pupils * 0.1 sec. That means that 10% of pupils download at the same time.
